Percentage of Women Receiving Skilled Attention During Deliveries

Percentage of women receiving skilled attention during deliveries (X6):  Safe delivery reduces the probability of maternal and infant death. Higher value of safe delivery is an indication of better utilization of RCH services. According to the RCH survey in India 41.9 percent of the deliveries were attended by the trained / skilled persons. The majority of the birth (58.0 per cent) in India are still unattended by the trained persons. This increases the risk of maternal and child death if the complication arises during the delivery.

The lowest percentage of births attended by skilled persons was recorded in the Samastipur district in Bihar (7.9 per cent). Contrary to this most of the districts in Kerala recorded the 100 per cent birth attended by the trained personnel.

The index value is computed by fixing the upper limit of 100 and lower limit of 7.9. The index is calculated as

Index6 = 100*(X6 – 7.9)/(100-7.9)

            = 100*(X6 – 7.9)/92.1

Where X6 is the percent of women receiving skilled attention during deliveries in a particular district. Higher percentage of safe deliveries in a district, higher the index value for the district.
